How important is it to get the look right?
Everyone has their own opinions on fashion and it is fair to say that not everyone likes the same thing. This is not a problem in most walks of life but it can cause a problem or two for some bands. If there is to be an agreed fashion statement behind the band, there needs to be a decision made that is liked by all and more importantly, looks good on everyone.
In a boy-band where everyone is slim and works out, it won't be an issue and they will likely have designers placing them into clothes anyway. However, for more traditional bands starting out, any form of uniform may look better on some people than others. This is where it is important for everyone to get a say in the image of the band and to decide if everyone can pull the look off. With so many bands competing against each other for attention, any advantage that can be had is vital and being stylish or distinctive can help a band be found by more people.
Equally, any disadvantage or weak link may see the band getting laughed at and this is where a band has to stick together and make the best decision for their career. Is it better to have an awesome drummer who has as much as style as a sack of chips or one who can't play too well but looks great in any range of clothing? The former should be the decision for any aspiring band but you can see why many bands have a fixation with looks and style. These are the bands that get a lot of attention at first but whether they have the skill and ability to forge a long career out of it is another matter.
It can also be worth your while getting others opinions on the style of the band. Girlfriends, sisters, family and friends can give an outsiders view on the look the band is trying to achieve and perhaps point out issues or areas that need to be improved upon. Style is in the eye of the beholder so having a few opinions on it can only be a good thing.

Coach Pamela assists groups and individuals with developing priorities, balancing band life with day jobs, relationships within and outside of the band and the passion of the art. When you are surrounded by "yes people" it is important to have an impartial facilitator to give it to you straight, to kick your butt when it needs to be. You have agents and managers to handle the band as an entity. You need a coach to guide the most important part of the band, its members, to a life of balance.
