Duncan can have a bad game and hit a double-double, but it will be Parker, Ginobili, Bowen, Finley, Horry and the rest of the crew that simply will continue to pour it on. Meaning he controls a game both directly and indirectly. Mind you, it is conceivable the SA defense could shut him down and then the Cavs role players shoot bricks at an ice covered hoop all night, but this is the biggest series of all their lives and they have nothing to lose. No one expected them here, yet an entire region is now on their bandwagon. LeBron will make an impact, and that impact is enough to bridge a 7.5 point spread.

3) The Cavs are hot. They are 21-6-1 against the spread in their last 28 road games and 38-15-1 ATS in their last 54 game over all. Of the last 10 times they were underdogs, 80% of those cashed in profits for their fans. Take trends as you will, because honestly, you are only as good as your next game. But their last game was pretty good, as were the games before that. The bottom line is not only did they beat the Spurs straight up, twice this season, but they beat or tied the spread nearly 79% of the time on the road, and 80% of the time as underdogs in their recent history. Yet they are larger underdogs than before?

4) A quick glance will show SA as leaders in almost every statistical category, but a closer look will show the numbers are closer than it seems. SA has a decided edge in playoff ppg as a team, 97.9 versus the Cavs 90.9, but SA has played more offense orientated teams Denver, Utah and the Suns all push offense over defense. The Cavs meanwhile faced both Wash and NJ who definitely are capable of scoring, but not once were at the level of the Suns and only Wash came close to Denvers season output. Then, add in they played a season strong defense team in Detroit, and thought Ill let the fans argue what conference was better, the bottom line is SA played against teams that rely more on offense, and therefore allow more offense. They have not yet played a defensive team of the Cavs caliber. Which leads us to our next stat, rpg: SA=39.8, CLE=43.9. Cle has averaged more rpg against opponents who shot less. Which means they hit the boards significantly harder than SA. Looking at the numbers closer, 7.5 points seems like the lock of the year.

There were no characters as recognised to children of the 90's as Sonic and Mario, with Sonic's "Q Score" (a rating that rates something based on it's popularity) even surpassing that of Mickey Mouse. With such results, it seemed obvious this rivalry wouldn't die out quickly.

Contrary to popular belief, Mario made his debut in the 1981 Donkey Kong game for the arcade. Although he was called "Jumpman" he looked exactly the same as the Mario that appeared in the first game with his name in the title "Mario Bros." This was a basic game that didn't scroll, and it required killing all the enemies in a "Phase" and then progressing to the next phase. In this age, it is hard to see the appeal of this game, but in it's time it was rather entertaining.

This was the first side scrolling Mario game and it set a standard for all the 16 bit Mario games to come. While it was not the first side scrolling platformer, it was the first done well, and allowed other developers to copy the formula. For this reason, this game is hailed by many as the saviour of the video game industry as the industry was in a great deal of trouble before it's release.

Possibly more noteworthy, was Mario's transition into the 3d world. Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 received perfect scores from countless professional review companies. It is still seen today as the best ever 3d platformer, and many have tried but failed to replicate the success of Super Mario 64.

Sonic's creators knew from the beginning that Sega needed a mascot for it's Genesis/Mega Drive system that could help market it's console to compete with Mario and the Super Nintendo. They looked at Mario and perceived him as stuffy and uninteresting and decided to tap into the younger generation who was after something "cooler" with more attitude. After many considerations including "Mighty the Armadillo" Sonic the Hedgehog was decided on and a team of 15 began work on what would be the first Sonic game, "Sonic the Hedgehog" for the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Popular opinion said Sonic didn't really hit his straps until the second game for the 16 bit console. In this his little sidekick Tails was introduced and collecting all the chaos emeralds saw Sonic transform into "Super Sonic" which was a yellow, super fast super strong version of the character.

Sonic's 3d games however have not seen the success of it's rival Mario. Sonic 3d Blast for the Genesis/Mega Drive was an average attempt, and it wasn't until the Dreamcast where we saw a 3d Sonic game that was really worth playing called "Sonic Adventure." However, since creating that formula that worked perfectly, Sega have made odd choices with games forcing you to play as Sonic's less entertaining sidekicks to access the fun Sonic levels. Sonic the Hedgehog on the 360/PS3 received awful reviews. Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii seems to be the only game since Sonic Adventure that has really got it right with Sega finally realising that what made the originals so fun, was Sonic's blistering speed.

Sega's decision to no longer create consoles has no seen the creation of the first game where Mario and Sonic can go head to head called "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games." After selling about 1 million copies of this game, it is clear this rivalry is still alive and kicking. Many have no doubt thought back to those schoolyard arguments and thought "Finally! I can prove x is better than y!"

It is almost human nature to default to the least challenging functions in life. For example, reading a book requires focus, and patience- it forces you outside of your perspective and way of thinking and introduces new possibilities. Playing video games does little, if any, of this. It is quite feasible to spend entire days and nights playing without experiencing a single thought- provoking process.

2. Escape

Living in a synthetic cyber world allows oneself to ignore the worries and responsibilities of real life. It encourages you to be content with whatever state your current affairs might be in. While I agree that stress-relieving activities can be helpful, especially after a long day at school or work, there is an extreme danger in spending too much time on them. For myself, this meant feeling okay about my lack of direction, my loss of desire for a career, my single status, etc. Arriving at this point in life is a very treacherous position to be in, and it becomes more and more difficult to reverse the process the longer it is allowed to continue.

3. Entertainment

This is especially common in today's youth. Kids are raised to believe they deserve constant entertainment. Young children sit in front of movies and are given noise-making toys from an early age. Even schools are becoming more and more entertainment based, with lessons being given via videos and computers. Students are encouraged to watch movies for "research" purposes, instead of the "old fashioned" methods (reading!). Those same students come home, and what do they do? Turn on the television until dinner time- only to eat their meal in the same place because a large number of families have accepted eating meals in front of the television as normal. It's no wonder so many people turn to video games.

4. Self-Esteem

This can be especially enticing for the online gamer. When I played my online game, I had my character built up to the point where other players thought very highly of me. I was constantly complimented for my accomplishments, and not a day went by when I wasn't asked, even begged, to play with another player on his team (the competitive side of the game). I became known as an extremely good gamer, which really fed my ego and made me feel like a "somebody". The problem is, it was never enough; I would sit around for hours waiting for less-accomplished players to take notice of me. When thinking about trying for a specific achievement, my motivation was almost always: "People would really think I'm an incredible player if I succeed at this." Usually, I was right- they did think that, but I still couldn't escape the sinking feeling that none of this is real. Instead of feeling confident in myself because of my uniqueness and different strengths and abilities as a human being, I was deriving a poor imitation from people I would never meet or even know their real name for that matter.

In my 3 years of online gaming, I came across many people who admitted to me their fear of real social interaction. The amazing thing was, they appeared to be very outgoing and accessible to other players. This seems to be a common scenario for those who feel they are unattractive and awkward in person, but believe they can gain the attention and approval of others by portraying a false image of themselves through their online world. After all, having "friends" online is better than having none, right? Don't get the wrong impression, there is nothing inherently harmful about interacting with people through the internet. The real danger comes when an individual begins to accept and even prefer it over in-person relationships, even to the extent of excluding them altogether.

6. Romance

Believe it or not, a large number of online players are looking for love- in all the wrong places. Now, I am not against meeting someone online if the end goal is to be with that person in real life, but this is not the case with the majority of gamers. Many are content to simply interact with their "special someone" over the internet, all while keeping them at a safe distance and retaining their anonymity. What is worse is the fact that people already in relationships (even marriages with families) are falling prey to this form of e-romance, and the results are almost always devastating.

I believe a lot can be learned through looking at the type of games a person chooses to play. Most games have a goal, a way to overcome challenging scenarios and "win". Determining what these objectives are can provide great insight into why a person prefers some games over others.

1. Is it an aggressive game? Becoming more and more popular today are violence games. Players are encouraged to use any weapon and any means possible to inflict pain and death on their victims. Your child may not go to the lengths of real life violence, but the long term effects on their relationship skills can still be detrimental.

It can be, but again, the common concept throughout this book is balance. Are your children also participating in real life activities where teamwork is encouraged? Commonplace in this genre are sports games and "capture the flag" scenario games. Both can be very enjoyable, but should never be a full-time replacement for the real thing.

3. Is the game highly competitive? Like myself, many people have a tendency to be extremely competitive, and a large number of games target those tendencies. Guitar Hero is a game that simulates playing the guitar by having a plastic model of a guitar as a controller. For me, I envision a role-playing game (RPG) fraught with turned-based combat and towns full of common folk ready to share information with you. I also think of three particular games: Tales of Symphonia (Nintendo Gamecube, Playstation 2), Tales of the Abyss (Playstation 2), and Tales of Phantasia (Super Famicom, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, PSP). What do these three RPGs have in common? Let's take a look:

Tales of Symphonia - Like previous games in the Tales series, Tales of Symphonia uses a version of the Linear Motion Battle System - a real-time battle system, as opposed to the turn-based systems used in traditional role-playing games. When running around in the overworld, battles can be triggered by running into the monsters that dot the landscape. The Overlimit feature, which is a result of building 'tension points', allows characters to take less damage, perform special actions, and cast spells more quickly. 'Grade' is substituted for experience, and can be used to purchase items and EX gems

As characters level up in Tales of Symphonia, they can learn 'EX-skills' which allows them learn different abilities, sometimes combining them for greater effect. Each character can earn up to 25 titles in the game either by playing through a certain point in the game, by leveling, or by meeting certain conditions. Different titles will have different effects. Items in the game are a result of loot from battle, from recipes learned from the Wonder Chef (success in cooking is determined by the character's skill level), and from NPCs upgrading items when given certain components.

Along with the cut scenes in the game, decisions you make will affect how others think of Lloyd, the main character. Depending on the choices you make, the friendship's among the characters may change.

Tales of the Abyss - Tales of the Abyss is a story about Luke, and the value of friendship and sacrifice. Shattering your forgotten memories, a girl named Tear breaks into the castle, and you are taken from the safety of home to places unknown. The land is full of particles created from elements including light, dark, air, earth, fire, and water called Fonons, and the you can master the a particular area by using attacks that are based in one of six particles. Elemental attacks are made more powerful by using slot chambers to add special effects such as power, damage, and health increases, and as your characters level up, you have over 80 unlockable attributes that affect Luke and his friends. As you journey through your main quest of uncovering Luke's affiliation with the Order of Lorelei, side stories include cooking to increase attributes and accessorizing with swimsuits, upscale clothing, and more. You can journey by yourself, or invite up to three friends to play along as characters in Luke's party.

Tales of Phantasia - Tales of Phantasia, was a role-playing game originally released for the Super Famicom, and due to its success as a series, it has finally been releasted in North America. Today, Tales of Phantasia distinguishes itself with its action-oriented, side-scrolling battle sequences (reminding one of Zelda II - The Adventures of Link (NES).

Tales of Phantasia is the story of Cress, a teenager out hunting one day who encounters a strange phenomenon, and as a result realizes he must save the past in order to insure the present. Along the way, he'll be joined by several other characters, learning magic, commanding elementals, taking sides in political struggles, and more.

The combat system defies the tradition of most RPGS, and is most similar to Tales of Symphonia. Rather than take turn based attacks, battles in Tales of Phantasia put you in direct control of Cress. The combat system is pleasant diversion from turn-based RPGs, and the animations and backgrounds are beautiful, and have held up well over time on the Gameboy Advance.

Reading the back of the boxes of some Sega Master System games one morning over a box of cereal, I realized how bad the writing was for some of the games. The eagerly awaited expansion to the Guild Wars online RPG, Eye of the North, is now released. Eye of the North requires at least one of existing chapters of Guild Wars - Prophecies, Factions, or Nightfall. You can buy the expansion from a retailer, or it's available from within your Guild Wars client by clicking on the Guild Wars Store icon. Purchasing the expansion this way will take effect immediately, allowing you to instantly explore the new content in Guild Wars: Eye of the North.

Each main town from the three existing Guild Wars chapters will have a new NPC (Non Player Character) - you'll need to talk to them to receive the mission which takes you to Eye of the North: Characters from the original Guild Wars Prophecies campaign should seek out Len Caldoron in Lions Arch and accept the What Lies Beneath quest.

Characters from Guild Wars: Factions should seek out Minister of Maintenance Raiugyon in Kaineng Center and accept the I Feel the Earth Move Under Canthas Feet quest. Characters from Guild Wars: Nightfall should seek out Bendah in Kamadan and accept the Hole of Istan quest.

Once you have completed these missions you will find yourself in Boreal Station. You will also notice new purple Asura Gates have appeared on the map - these can be used to transport you direct to Boreal Station in the Eye of the North at any time. Within Eye of the North there are 4 new Title Tracks - Asura, Deldrimor, Ebon Vanguard, and Norn. By undertaking quests for each of the groups, you can gain reputation points, which will increase your rank in the new Title Tracks.

Once you have gained 1000 reputation points, you will reach Rank 1. You will now be able to gain a special Status Effect which will provide bonuses when exploring. As your rank in a Title Track increases, you'll also open to access to new services:

Rank 3: Access to a special item crafter. Each group has a single item crafter who provides unique and powerful items. You must spend a Skill Point to have these items crafted for you.

Rank 4: Access to an exclusive weapon crafter. Each group has a single weapon crafter who provides unique weapons, such as the Raven Scythe and the Charrslayer Axe.

Rank 5: Access to an exclusive armor crafter. Each group has a single armor crafter who provides single unique armor pieces, such as the Dread Mask or the Magma Gauntlets.

As your Rank increases, so do the bonuses granted from the special status effect your character receives when displaying the Title. There are also 50 new PvE skills in Eye of the North, which can be gained by completing quests for each of the groups. These skills and bonuses will also become more powerful as your Rank in the relevant Title Track increases. Through these new Title Tracks, the Eye of the North expansion provides a lot of extra content and challenges.

When it comes to online role playing games like the Age of Conan, power leveling is a phrase that is used to describe the process of rapidly increasing the character's level in the shortest possible time during the game play. This concept of power leveling is most commonly applied to the idea of trying to level up from any current level to the highest possible level in the game, which in the Age of Conan video game is the level 80. Some people have been lead to believe that power leveling can only be accomplished through hour after hour of grinding monsters over and over and over again. Luckily, not only is this not the case, but it is also one of the most ineffective ways for you to level your character up because there is so much more involved in this game.

What you should do instead is to organize all of your chests into a specific pattern so that you can have something of a pre set route to complete them in. This will minimize how much time you will take to get to the objective of each of the quests that you are completing. Another excellent method for leveling quickly is just to concentrate on the most efficient quests. For example, if you have a quest that is going to give you a better weapon as a result, and this better weapon will help you speed up the rest of the quests, then you should do this quest first and take advantage of the better weapon for the rest of your leveling.

Another method for quick and effective power leveling is to enlist a friend's help, especially someone who is either in your guild or in your kinship. If they have some extra time to help you, they may be able to walk you through some of the more difficult quests, allowing you to complete quests beyond what your level would allow you to complete on your own. This is an outstanding way for you to level up as quickly as possible, especially if you work with someone who already knows how to quickly complete the quests at hand.

If the people you are playing with are of a higher level than you are, they will be better equipped to kill bigger, better foes and monsters which means that you can gain more experience even when you are not a high enough level to tackle such opponents. Just do not get too carried away, because in an environment where your level is not high enough, you can easily fall prey to bigger, harder monsters and other challenges. Power leveling with the help of a higher level player is also commonly referred to as rushing, and finding someone to help you rush through the bigger, better quests should not be impossible. After a good rush, you will be a high enough level that you can complete the lesser quests and kill the lesser monsters on your own.

When I was thinking of which game I should write my first review for, I decided it would only be fitting to write it on my favorite game of all time (read about my top ten here). Now, you may think "oh, this review is going to be biased, he's gonna give it a 10/10 because it's his favorite game!" Well, yeah, that's how reviews work. If you like a game, naturally you're going to score it higher!

Keeping that in mind, I will try and give this game (and all the games I review) a more analytical approach when I review it. I certainly won't just write "omg this game kicks ass, sweet game, lots of fun to play". I am going to talk about the positives and negatives of each game, and who knows; maybe Final Fantasy VII won't get a 10/10! So, to the review!

Final Fantasy VII sets you in the role of young spiky-haired Cloud Strife, an ex-SOLDIER member, who is now a mercenary. At the center of the plot is SHINRA, a company trying to drain the planet of energy in order to fill their wallets. Meanwhile, another ex-SOLDIER, Sephiroth, has his own agenda which will essentially make himself ruler of the universe. Phew!

FF7 is stunning!

While the story may seem complicated, underneath it all is the basic rpg-type storyline of Young-Hero-Saving-The-World. I usually get quite disappointed when I start an rpg and realize that I must save the world, however Final Fantasy VII does a good enough job of mixing the story up quite a bit in order to be a little less clich and a little more interesting.

The colorful cast of characters add plenty of interest. These include a jacked guy with a gun for a hand and a temper, a talking cat sitting on a stuffed animal, a talking tiger-type animal, and several more ordinary humans with extraordinary personalities. While this game was made in 1997 and the absence of voice acting is to be expected, it's still a little disappointing, especially reviewing this game in 2008.

The battle system is pretty standard, with magic spells and regular attacks. However 2 key pieces make it stand out. The first is limit breaks. Whenever a character receives damage, there is a little meter which begins to fill up. When this meter is full, instead of doing a normal attack, your character can use a limit. A limit is some sort of attack or spell which is very high powered. The attacks can usually do 2 or 3 times the normal attack damage (sometimes more) and sometimes to more than one enemy. The limit spells can be healing to your party among other things.

The second thing which makes the battle system stand out is the use of materia. Magic spells can only come from materia that you pick up, buy, or win. This materia is attached to a slot in your weapon or armor (different weapons/armor have more slots). On some weapons and armor, two slots are connected, and you can connect materia to each other. For instance, if you have the cure materia connected with nothing, you can cure one party member each time you use it. However, if you connect the cure materia with the 'all' materia, you can cure all your party members each time you use it! This is a very nice tweak to battling which provides for some cool combinations.

Final Fantasy VII initially appears to be a very linear game, taking place in Midgar, the giant city run by Shinra. The story moves pretty quickly as you progress along a very defined path. However, the story slows down significantly when you reach the world map, and the game opens up and changes quite a bit. Significant game play changes are usually risky, however FF7 is able to accomplish this transition seamlessly. You are still following the same story, except that you have a little more time to look around and explore.

Although the game seems more open at this point, the story still remains quite linear, usually telling you that [item/person x] is now at [location y] and you need to get there by taking [route z]. However, the twists and turns that the plot takes and the generally extremely interesting story really make it hard to notice this linear behavior

The game sounds great. The music is very compelling and really does an excellent job of describing the emotion and feel of a sequence. The sound effects are excellent, and several of them will be eternally stuck in my head.

Graphically, Final Fantasy VII is a complete masterpiece. The game is stunning to look at. From the ordinary game play to the battle graphics to the absolutely astounding CGI scenes, this game is jaw dropping (for its time).

The added bonuses to the game are great. You can spend hours in the Golden Saucer, a giant casino with tons to do, you can chase after the ruby and emerald weapons, you can try to breed a golden chocobo, or you can try and find the two hidden characters. While the main storyline probably brushes close to 50 hours, a pretty good length for an rpg, with the extra stuff to do, you can push this game well into the 60 hour plus range.

Quite frankly, Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game of all time. The story is absolutely the best I have ever seen in a game (or movie, OR BOOK for that matter), the graphics are beautiful, the sound is intense, and the battle system is unique. Despite a somewhat linear plot and the absence of voice acting and lack of a truly unique battle system, this game is fantastic. The characters are brilliantly colorful, from the npc's with one or two lines to the main characters; this cast is one that I won't forget for a very long time.

This game is one that is without a doubt worth the price of admission. Even today, in 2008, the $60 price tag on ebay for a used copy is cheap compared to the value of this game. If you haven't played Final Fantasy VII, or even if you have, but you don't own it, you need to get your hands on a copy now!
